House Church @ Nyack College

Posted on 12:40 PM by Kung-Li Deng

During the memorial weekend, our whole family had a wonderful retreat at Nyack College.  Not only we enjoyed the meetings and nice fellowship with brothers and sisters from the East Coast, our family also had a very special time together on a Sunday morning--doing house church by the Hudson River.

Yes, there were only 3 of us: Hsiaowei, Zach and myself.  Bible says that it only takes 2 (or 3) gathering together to have the presence of the Lord!!

Worship:  we chose a very simple song.  Worship is not only limited to music: it is involving our whole human being: spirit, soul and body.  You can notice that, in the background, you can hear also birds chirping and wind blowing through tree leaves.  You can also see that the wonderful nature, created by God, was also singing praises to the Creator.

Word::  This our favorite time: to share God's word. We had a scripture from Matthew 6:25 "therefore I (Jesus) tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?" We
make this moment solemn but participatory. Zach,
though only 5 year old, was also able to join us to
share his thought on an example how not to worry

Share:  Hsiaowei and I were very encouraged by this little brave boy who shared his view on financial need and crisis!!

Applications:  We sat down and shared our worries:  Dad worried about how quickly we can sale our house in up state NY.  Mom shared about her worried on few things.  Zach shared about his worry about new school coming in fall: going potty, getting up earlier.  Then we all apply the scripture to our lives:  throw the worry like a stone into the Hudson river (well, representing God's grace).

Fun:  Zach ran down the hill to show how not to worry!!

Notes:

- Too Simple?  Only for Children?  Maybe you think this is too simple, and only good for kids or children Sunday school.  Hsiaowei and I were both encouraged by the message:  do not worry and just run the race.  We may have missed a great sermon or powerful worship but we captured a direct message applicable to our situation into our heart from this simple gathering.  And we knew that we also ministered to Zach regarding his worries when he shared freely.  This probably is what has been missing in today's church: listen to God directly and minister to each other

- Real Spiritual battle:  House church, though simple, is involving as real, if not more, spiritual battle as institutional church.  Zach was hurt the next day in an accident that we can describe as "spiritual battle". Praise the Lord!!  The wound looked scary but it healed quickly and now he is completely fine!!  Through this incident, God also show Zach that he is in the perfect hand of his heavenly Father. Also God led us to meet a couple whose wife came over to help Zach when he was hurt.  We had a wonderful fellowship!!
