The Room: An Essay from a Young life

One of 5 Rock Youth, Hope, shared this essay written by a young man.  I am deeply touched.

The Room

In that place between wakefulness and dreams, I found myself in the room. There were no distinguishing features except for the one wall covered with small index card files. They were like the ones in libraries that list titles by author or subject in alphabetical order. But these files, which stretched from floor to ceiling and seemingly endless in either direction, had very different headings.
As I drew near the wall of files, the first to catch my attention was one that read "Girls I have liked." I opened it and began flipping through the cards.. I quickly shut it, shocked to realize that I recognized the names written on each one. And then without being told, I knew exactly where I was. This lifeless room with its small files was a crude catalog system for my life. Here were written the actions of my every moment, big and small, in a detail my memory couldn't match. A sense of wonder and curiosity, coupled with horror, stirred within me as I began randomly opening files and exploring their content. Some brought joy and sweet memories; others a sense of shame and regret so intense that I would look over my shoulder to see if anyone was watching.
A file named "Friends" was next to one marked "Friends I have betrayed." The titles ranged from the mundane to the outright weird. "Books I Have Read," "Lies I Have Told," "Comfort I have Given," "Jokes I Have Laughed at."
Some were almost hilarious in their exactness: "Things I've Yelled At My Brothers." Others I couldn't laugh at: "Things I Have Done in My Anger,” "Things I Have Muttered Under My Breath at My Parents." I never ceased to be surprised by the contents. Often there were many more cards than expected. Sometimes fewer than I hoped. I was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of the life I had lived...
Could it be possible that I had the time in my years to fill each of these thousands or even millions of cards? But each card confirmed this truth. Each was written in my own handwriting. Each signed with my signature.
When I pulled out the file marked "TV Shows I Have Watched," I realized the files grew to contain their contents. The cards were packed tightly, and yet after two or three yards, I hadn't found the end of the file. I shut it, shamed, not so much by the quality of shows but more by the vast time I knew that file represented.
When I came to a file marked "Lustful Thoughts," I felt a chill run through my body. I pulled the file out only an inch, not willing to test its size, and drew out a card. I shuddered at its detailed content. I felt sick to think that such a moment had been recorded. An almost animal rage broke on me.
One thought dominated my mind: “No one must ever see these cards! No one must ever see this room! I have to destroy them!" In insane frenzy I yanked the file out. Its size didn't matter now. I had to empty it and burn the cards.
But as I took it at one end and began pounding it on the floor, I could not dislodge a single card. I became desperate and pulled out a card, only to find it as strong as steel when I tried to tear it. Defeated and utterly helpless, I returned the file to its slot. Leaning my forehead against the wall, I let out a long, self-pitying sigh.
And then I saw it. The title bore "People I Have Shared the Gospel With." The handle was brighter than those around it, newer, almost unused. I pulled on its handle and a small box not more than three inches long fell into my hands. I could count the cards it contained on one hand.
And then the tears came. I began to weep. Sobs so deep that they hurt. They started in my stomach and shook through me. I fell on my knees and cried. I cried out of shame, from the overwhelming shame of it all. The rows of file shelves swirled in my tear-filled eyes. No one must ever, ever know of this room. I must lock it up and hide the key. But then as I pushed away the tears, I saw Him.
No, please not Him... Not here. Oh, anyone but Jesus. I watched helplessly as He began to open the files and read the cards. I couldn't bear to watch His response. And in the moments I could bring myself to look at His face, I saw a sorrow deeper than my own. He seemed to intuitively go to the worst boxes.
Why did He have to read every one? Finally, He turned and looked at me from across the room. He looked at me with pity in His eyes. But this was a pity that didn't anger me. I dropped my head, covered my face with my hands and began to cry again. He walked over and put His arm around me. He could have said so many things. But He didn't say a word. He just cried with me.
Then He got up and walked back to the wall of files. Starting at one end of the room, He took out a file and, one by one, began to sign His name over mine on each card.
"No!" I shouted rushing to Him. All I could find to say was "No, no" as I pulled the card from Him. His name shouldn't be on these cards. But there it was, written in red so rich, so dark, and so alive.
The name of Jesus covered mine. It was written with His blood. He gently took the card back He smiled a sad smile and began to sign the cards. I don't think I'll ever understand how He did it so quickly, but the next instant it seemed I heard Him close the last file and walk back to my side. He placed His hand on my shoulder and said, "It is finished."
I stood up, and He led me out of the room. There was no lock on its door. There were still cards to be written.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16

Brian's parents had forgotten about the essay when a cousin found it while cleaning out the teenager's locker at Teays Valley High School in Pickaway County. Brian had been dead only hours, but his parents desperately wanted every piece of his life near them, notes from classmates and teachers, and his homework. Only two months before, he had handwritten the essay about encountering Jesus in a file room full of cards detailing every moment of the teen's life. But it was only after Brian's death that Beth and Bruce Moore realized that their son had described his view of heaven. It makes such an impact that people want to share it. "You feel like you are there," Mr. Moore said. Brian Moore died May 27, 1997, the day after Memorial Day. He was driving home from a friend's house when his car went off Bulen-Pierce Road in Pickaway County and struck a utility pole. He emerged from the wreck unharmed but stepped on a downed power line and was electrocuted. The Moore 's framed a copy of Brian's essay and hung it among the family portraits in the living room. "I think God used him to make a point. I think we were meant to find it and make something out of it," Mrs. Moore said of the essay. She and her husband want to share their son's vision of life after death. "I'm happy for Brian... I know he's in heaven. I know I'll see him.”

Vision Has a Price

A mountain tree if it would see
The far horizons and the stars,
May never know a sheltered place
Nor grow symmetrical in grace.
Such tress must battle doggedly
the blasts, and bear the scars.

-Loyal Marion Thompson

This photo shows a lone tree on the top of a hill:

Standing high above Chapel-le-Dale near Ingleton is Twistleton Scar. This is a wild place where the prevailing wind blows relentlessly and hardy trees grow in the barren rocky landscape. Distorted and bent but unbroken, they shrug off adversity. Standing proud, stoical and resolute they are symbolic of all life that strives to exist in the harsh upland environment of the Yorkshire Dales.

Vision Comes with A Price

"A mountain tree if it would see"

It starts with a decision to be separated, to be a mountain tree.  Not that growing in the forest has any thing wrong.  Un-blurred vision is usually received at a high place separated from the seemingly good in order to bring out the best.  Jesus went up into a mountain alone to pray and to call unto Him his twelve disciples (Mark 3:13-15).  And also he chose to take three disciples to go with him into a high mountain apart from other disciples where He was transfigured before them (Matt 171-2).  At both places, He revealed the secret of His plan and heart toward those who pay the price to heed the call to follow Him to a higher place.

"Such tree must battle doggedly, the blasts and beat the scars"

The altitude helps one to see further but it comes with an incredible price: blasting winds, severe cold, white hot, and a condition with much less water.  But it MUST battle.  Because every battle brings victory that allows one to continue "seeing" the far horizon and stars.  Many visionaries have stopped battling and folded back to their comfort zone so they also stopped "seeing".

"May never know a sheltered place"

Worst of all, it is a place of being alone: vision always comes with a price tag that says "come up and be alone" (Rev. 4:1) Many Christian today rest in the safety of the sheltered place, not there is any thing wrong with it, satisfied with the security and protection it provides.  Lives are beautiful to the eye and "symmetrical in grace".  But there is one thing lacking in this picture, they would never know the Christ who calls up ascend the mountain with Him.

Missed Thanksgiving Dinner

We missed a Thanksgiving dinner at Bruce and Yih-Pai's lovely house last Friday. Zach was under the weather since Thursday night so we had to pull out almost at the last minute.

On Sunday, we got these three cards from Bruce: he hand-made for each of their invited guests a card to be placed at their seat around thanksgiving table. I could imagine a formal dinning with a wonderful spirit of Thanksgiving in the house!

We missed it!!
But we did not miss these three cards with bible verses picked by our lovely host couple. I read out loud on Sunday morning with a grateful heart.
"I will praise God's name in song and glorify Him in thanksgiving."

Suddenly I felt warm blessings beaming out from these cards in my hand. There cards are no longer for a missed thanksgiving dinner. They are the heart of the Thanksgiving dinner that will last long in our memory.

Tang's Family Leading Worship

Dear all,
Do you still believe in miracles?  The best kind of miracle is usually simple and sometimes going on unnoticeable: changing a person's life one day at a time.  And God is, I should say, the best miracle worker in this area: changing our lives on a daily basis out of a simple faith toward His words.

Let me take you back in time to illustrate how God does his miracle work....

Episode I:Kitten Joins on-line Bible Study
If you still remember one earlier blog on  "House Church at work: A Kitten Joins on-line Bible Study": a single dad who took care of his two young daughters took time and joined our weekly on-line bible time, spending time with God's word.  Let me quote the blog:
"One musketeer’s company is going through a round of layoff toward the end of Feb. He is a single dad raising up two young daughters alone."

It was certainly a valley for his life journey; it was a place of dark, bitterness, hopeless and tiresome.  But God had a different plan for him.

Episode II: Meet the Couple

There is nothing impossible for God!!  And He answers our prayer at his perfect timing.  In the year followed, we started to witness the miracle taking place before our eyes:  musketeer "single dad" was going to get married to a beautiful girl!!

Meet the Couple

Episode III: Tang's Family Leading Worship Together
Now I would like to invite you to the most recent episode:
"Tang's Family Leading Worship Together"

Let's believe together that God has a very different idea than most of us who are going through valleys and downs of our lives:  His ways are different than ours, His thoughts are higher than our thoughts!!

Can I invite you to join a live worship to sing "How Great is Our God".....

William Tennent: Father of the Great Awakening

William Tennent
Father of the Great Awakening
By Wendy Wirsch

Before Jonathan Edwards delivered his sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”; before George Whitefield preached to thousands in the open air on our colonial shores, William Tennent, “an old grey-headed disciple and soldier of Jesus Christ,” lit a revival fire that spread west into Ohio and south to North Carolina. This Presbyterian minister fathered the Great Awakening in the Middle Atlantic Colonies.

In 1726 Rev. Tennent and his family settled in the backwoods of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He started pastoring some small congregations—the first in Bensalem and the second near the forks of the Neshaminy Creek. This second church, Neshaminy, became his “favorite child”. In 1727 William Tennent and this fledgling congregation built a stone sanctuary on a rise in the church graveyard. The Tennent family first resided in a rental property on a busy public road in Northampton Township between Bensalem and Neshaminy. Later—through the generosity of his wealthy cousin, James Logan—he acquired fifty acres in the same township and a house for the family was built on that land.

In the early eighteenth century the American colonies faced a serious problem. Not enough ministers could be found to serve the spiritual needs of a growing population. This problem was acute in the middle colonies. Young men seeking training for the ministry needed to study at an approved school in New England or return to Europe for an education. William Tennent, a graduate of the University of Edinburgh, solved the problem by training young men for the ministry himself. He began in his Northampton home with his four sons. Soon other young men came to him seeking an education.
By 1735 William Tennent resigned from the Bensalem congregation to devote his time and energy to Neshaminy. In that year he moved from his Northampton home to a hundred acre plantation in Warminster to be closer to the church. Near his new home he built a log cabin structure in which he educated the growing number of young men who wanted to study with him. While Rev. Tennent had no name for the school, his critics derisively dubbed it the “Log College.”

Controversy clouded his rough hewn school. William Tennent’s beliefs ran contrary to the theology of many of his colleagues. Most Presbyterian ministers of that period stressed a social covenant of grace and favored a tightly organized church with traditional educational standards for ministers. On the other hand he preached the necessity of personal salvation in Jesus Christ. Man needed to be convicted of his sinful state and repent. It was this “controversial” theology that William Tennent imparted to his students. He ignited a fire in these young revivalists which they carried as far west as Ohio and south into Virginia and North Carolina.

On November 22, 1739 the young itinerant evangelist, George Whitefield, came to the churchyard at Neshaminy to preach to a crowd of 3,000 people. After several hours of ministry Whitefield retired to the plantation home of William and Catherine Tennent. These two men—one an old disciple of Jesus Christ and the other a young upstart—discussed what measures they could take to promote Christ’s Kingdom. In his journal Whitefield described the Log College as a “school of the old prophets.”
By 1742 the aged William Tennent decided to retire from the pastoral ministry, but he continued to teach in his beloved log cabin school. He remained an educator until his death in 1746. After that the Log College closed its doors, but that was not the end. His “college” gave birth to sixty-three schools of higher learning. In 1746 the first of the progeny, the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) opened its doors.

Upon William Tennent’s death the plantation was sold. Reportedly the new owners turned the Log College into a pigsty. Eventually the logs rotted and it was torn down.    The stone church built in 1727 fell into disrepair, and in 1792 that building was demolished. However subsequent owners of the plantation continued living in the Tennent home. Today the land that was once the Tennent plantation is now the property of Christ’s Home, a ministry for children and senior citizens. All that remains of William Tennent’s life there is an eighteenth century dwelling house. Research points to the strong probability that this was his home.    Time and neglect have taken its toll on this vacant structure.
I am working with members of the Millbrook Society, a regional historical and archaeological group, to restore this important piece of our Presbyterian heritage. We believe that this home—rehabilitated, restored, and opened to the public—will serve to bring the teachings and ministry of William Tennent to a society which knows little about him. The nearby Log College Monument would also be included in our plans. All of this will take a lot of funding, time, and hard work, but we believe it is worth it. At a time when we need to restore the spiritual foundation laid by William Tennent, this home needs our help.

If you share our vision and want to assist us, please contact Mr. Ed Price, President of the Millbrook Society, at millbrook@voicenet.com or Wendy Wirsch, 215- 343-1599.    Together let’s reclaim his plantation home and the spiritual heritage of this Father of the Great Awakening.

Two Horses

Two Horses
Author Unknown

Just up the road from my home is a field, with two horses in it.

From a distance, each horse looks like any other horse.
But if you stop your car, or are walking by, you will notice something quite amazing....

Looking into the eyes of one horse will disclose that he is blind.
His owner has chosen not to have him put down, but has made a good home for him.

This alone is amazing.

If you stand nearby and listen, you will hear the sound of a bell.
Looking around for the source of the sound, you will see that it comes from the smaller horse in the field.

Attached to the horse's halter is a small bell.

It lets the blind friend know where the other horse is, so he can follow.

As you stand and watch these two friends,
You'll see that the horse with the bell is always checking on the blind horse,
And that the blind horse will listen for the bell and then slowly walk
To where the other horse is,
Trusting that he will not be led astray.

When the horse with the bell returns
To the shelter of the barn each evening,
It stops occasionally and looks back,
Making sure that the blind friend isn't too far behind to hear the bell.

Like the owners of these two horses,
God does not throw us away just because we are not perfect
Or because we have problems or challenges.

He watches over us and even brings others into our lives
To help us when we are in need..

Sometimes we are the blind horse
Being guided by the little ringing bell of those who God places in our lives.

Other times we are the guide horse, helping others to find their way....

Good friends are like that...
You may not always see them, but you know they are always there..

Please listen for my bell and I'll listen for yours.

And remember...

Be kinder than necessary-

Everyone you meet is fighting
Some kind of battle.

Live simply,
Love generously,
Care deeply,
Speak kindly.......

And leave the rest to God!

Thank You For Your Time: a story for this season

There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could
stop him.

Over the phone, his mother told him, "Mr. Belser died last night The funeral is Wednesday." Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.

"Jack, did you hear me?"

"Oh, sorry, Mom.
Yes, I heard you. It's been so long since I thought of him. I'm sorry, but I honestly
thought he died years ago," Jack said.

"Well, he didn't forget you. Every time I saw him he'd ask how you were doing. He'd reminisce about the many days you spent over 'his side of the fence' as he put it," Mom told him.

"I loved that old house he lived in," Jack said.

"You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man's influence in your life," she said

"He's the one who taught me carpentry," he said. "I wouldn't be in this business if it weren't for
him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important...Mom, I'll be there for the funeral," Jack said.

As busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser's funeral was small and uneventful He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.

The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time.

Standing in the doorway, Jack paused for a moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space and time The house was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture....Jack stopped suddenly.

"What's wrong,
Jack?" his Mom asked..

"The box is gone," he said

"What box?" Mom asked.

"There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he'd ever tell me was 'the thing I value most,'" Jack said.

It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box.. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it.

"Now I'll never know what was so valuable to him," Jack said. "I better get some sleep. I have an early flight home, Mom."

It had been about two weeks since Mr. Belser died Returning home from work one day Jack discovered a note in his mailbox. "Signature required on a package. No one at home. Please stop by the main post office within the next three days," the note read.

Early the next day Jack retrieved the package. The small box was old and looked like it had been mailed a hundred years ago. The handwriting was difficult to read, but the return address caught his attention. "Mr. Harold Belser" it read. Jack took the box out to his car and ripped open the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack's hands shook as he read the note inside.

"Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bennett. It's the thing I valued most in my life." A small key was taped to the letter. His heart racing, as tears filling his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch.

Running his fingers slowly over the finely etched casing, he unlatched the cover. Inside he found these words engraved:

"Jack, Thanks for your time! -Harold Belser."

"The thing he valued most was...my time"

Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his office and cleared his appointments for the next two days. "Why?" Janet, his assistant asked.

"I need some time to spend with my son," he said.

"Oh, by the way, Janet, thanks for your time!"

"Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away,"

Think about this. You may not realize it, but
it's 100% true.

1. At least 2 people
in this world love you so much they would die for you.

2. At least 15 people
in this world love you in some way.

3. A smile from you
can bring happiness to anyone, even if they don't like you.

4. Every night, SOMEONE
thinks about you before they go to sleep.

5. You mean the world
to someone.

6. If not for you, someone
may not be living.

7. You are special and
unique.

8. When you think you
have no chance of getting what you want, you probably won't get it, but if you trust
God to do what's best, and wait on His time, sooner or later, you will get it or
something better.

9. When you make the
biggest mistake ever, something good can still come from it.

10. When you think the
world has turned its back on you, take a look: you most likely turned your back
on the world.

11. Someone that you
don't even know exists loves you.

12. Always remember the
compliments you received. Forget about the rude remarks.

13. Always tell
someone how you feel about them; you will feel much better when they know and you'll
both be happy.

14. If you have a great
friend, take the time to let them know that they are great.

The Missing Piece Meets the Big O

Recently, Hsiaowei brought a book from a second-hand book sale in Princeton, "The Missing Piece Meets the Big O" by Shel Siverstein [a youtube clip is included below for your reference].  As Zach and I were reading this book page by page together one sunny afternoon, it starts to dawn on me that I might have been the "missing" piece all alone in my walk with Jesus.

"Being the Missing Piece"
I know that this book is a story on how to grow in a relationship, not a Christian discipleship textbook.  However, it points out a key I might have missed entirely in the past: my faith should be a growing relationship with Jesus, not just a weekly routine or a believe system or a religious act of sort.  My walk with Jesus should not be a never-ending searching for a perfect fit to something, a lot of times, good things around me. These might include church, acceptance from people, organization, worldly success, financial security..... should I go on with the list?   That is why Jesus asks Peter in John 21, "Do you love me more than there [...]" and we can all fill in the blank.

"Come and You will See"  In Book of John 1:39, Jesus invited two disciples including Andrew to come and see where Jesus lived.  It is an invitation to welcome these disciples into his lives: to see where he lives, eats, talks and faces daily chores, routines and work.  This is the way of life, in fact, a only way to life abundant: to follow Jesus on our daily lives.  A lot of times, being the missing piece, I have been expecting an invitation to a "spiritual" experience, "promotion" in the church circle, and even acceptance to a prestigious social class.  This is a never ending searching, won't stop until I meet the Big O.

"Meeting the Big O"  It is all about meeting the big O and decide to roll following His path:  his name is Jesus and follow his food steps: putting his yoke on me (Matthew 11:29) in daily lives and allowing the "walk" of faith to mode (transform) myself into his image (Romans 12:2).  The corners, sharp edges and bruises in my life start to go well-rounded along the walk of faith.  I started to realize now I can roll a bit without any help.  And not only I find life, I find life abundant.

"Discipleship the same way" part of this walk is to learn how to have a lifestyle of true disciple: the true meaning of life comes from the death of a old life and birth of a new life.  This applied to parenting, marriage and any relation-based course of life.

Voice from Egypt proclaiming Chrst as Lord

Father Zakaria Botros from Egypt has a satellite TV show in the Muslim world and claims Christ as Lord and Saviour. He currently has a bounty on his head for his faith. Very powerful video.

Father Zakaria Botros is far and away the most-watched and most-effective Arab-American evangelist focused on reaching the Muslim world. He is funny, feisty, brilliant, opinionated, and provocative. But rather than preaching the gospel of conservatism, he is preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. And his enemies do not simply want to silence him. They want to assassinate him.

An al Qaeda website has posted his photograph and named him one of the "most wanted" infidels in the world. The Radicals have even put a bounty on his head. The Christian Broadcasting Network reported the figure was as high as $60 million. Just to put that in context, the U.S. bounty on Osama bin Laden's head is "only" $25 million.

- Shortly before he died, one of Israel's most prominent rabbis wrote the name of the Messiah on a small note which he requested would remain sealed until now. When the note was opened, it revealed what many have known for centuries: Yehoshua, or Yeshua (Jesus), is the Messiah. Full story:

與陳逸豪牧師談家教會 1

“我們都是一家人” 是我非常喜歡的詩歌。當歌詞唱到

因著耶穌同敬拜,因著耶穌蒙慈愛,因著耶穌彼此恩慈來相待;

(Chuck Bentley)
